Introduction

Welcome to the BGCS archive of the Amateur Championship. 

This first release covers the years 1885-1982 and it is hoped to issue a further release will that bring the data up to the present. Data is arranged in three ways;     

                 Winners of the Amateur Championship 1885-1982                                                                                       
                 Alphabetically, by individual golfer (ie entrant)     

                 Alphabetically, by home golf club, followed by entrant

The bulk of the data has been obtained from The Times, The Scotsman and Field.   These sources contained a high incidence of typographic errors, many of which were easily corrected. Other typos, however may remain so if any are found, these will be gratefully received at email geliharris@aol.com and actioned in the next release.      

User guidelines                                                                                                                                                                           

• Where a surname comprises two words, eg “A. N. Stoner Crowther” entries are usually recorded under “Crowther” but, for completeness, users should search under “Stoner” also.
• Researchers seeking entries beginning Mc... or Mac.. are advised to search under  both  forms.                                                                 
• Inthe period 1885-1939 the brothers later known as Count John de Bendern and Count Alaric de Bendern appear under surname “De Forest”. Thereafter they appear under the surname "de Bendern".
• When researching a club, users are advised to search under all forms of a club's name, especially in cases of the prefix
  Royal .
• An entrant who appeared in the draw but failed to play is simply recorded as “no show”      
• The entries in the "Comments" column are by no means intended to be exhaustive but merely as an occasional, pleasant distraction".  (Constructive suggestions for additions to the Comments are invited via the email address above)       
•  A researcher interested in following the dramatic action involved in actually winning the Amateur title is advised to refer to:
