Through The Green

Introduction

It has been said that the Society's magazine Through the Green is the cement that binds the British Golf Collectors' Society members together. The fact that almost a third of our membership is comprised of lovers of the history, heritage, and traditions of golf from parts of the world, outside Great Britain confirms this statement.

The magazine has become a useful source of reference material for golf historians carrying out research on all forms of collectables, golfing personalities, golfing history, and rules of golf. It is particularly useful for those engaged in writing their own golf club's history.

As Alan Jackson originally wrote in his Foreword to this part of the website :

"For some time now members have suggested that an index of articles which have appeared in Through The Green would be welcome. As Editor, I have frequently wondered whether an article I was contemplating had appeared before, and on one occasion it had. So as much for the Editor's benefit as for the Members' " ...

He also said :

"In the early days TTG was very much of a newsletter and there were few articles, as we would define them. This meant there have been many "snippets", some recordable and others not.

Then there have been our regular Letter from America "scribes",whose contributions have been invaluable, Joe Murdoch, Leo Kelly, Pete Georgiady, and Dan Bagdade. Their pieces have always been immensely readable but not necessarily categorisable. And, of course, one of the pillars of TTG - Dick Durran. I suppose I could have listed every book he has reviewed but then we would have run out of paper. Suffice it to say that although these gentlemen's names do not necessarily appear in the index, their efforts on our behalf have been immense, and I would only say that their articles are well worth a second read. ......"

The final point he made is as true now as it was then in 2001 :

"Finally, a word of thanks to all contributors. Without your interest and efforts we would not have a magazine."

Then, as now, the Editor of Through the Green has the very great resource to call upon from within our membership, of world-wide expertise in all aspects of the glorious heritage of golf.
